Production and export of avocado Hass

Who are we?

We are wholesalers and distributors worldwide of dehydrated, salted, frozen and fresh wild edible seaweed from the lower estuary area.

High-quality products from the Galician coast due to their importance in the daily diet, which provides many minerals, vitamins and other substances.

We are in one of the geographical areas with the most sea produce – a unique sea harvest -, as the temperature during the harvesting season is the best in the entire North Atlantic area.

People who harvest the edible seaweed have a lot of experience and knowledge of the produce. The authorities are focused on its exploitation as a marine resource of economic interest. Our action focuses above all on the great Atlantic estuaries of southern Galicia.

In addition, we are also producers of Organic avocado, with more than 10,000 square meters of avocado trees. We treat our products in an organic manner and by hand, and we also do this when classifying the calibers.

Avocado Hass

History of the Hass avocado

The Hass avocado was introduced to the world market in 1960 and is currently one of the most common varieties. Therefore, below we will explain everything you need to know about the Hass avocado, its characteristics and how it is eaten.

In our recent history, it has been grown in the south of Spain (Málaga) and it is now also grown in Galicia, in the Baixo miño, where we now cultivate new plots with more than 20,000 m2 planted to date.

Characteristics of the Hass avocado

Among its main characteristics and advantages, it is noteworthy that it has a long harvest period, which has allowed it to increase its consumption worldwide, as well as its high quality. Besides, these avocados contain an oil concentration of up to 12%.
As for its portion of water, it is 70%, while it also has a large content of vitamins B and E. Concerning its fruit and seed, they are relatively small, since their weight is only about 300 grams maximum, while its skin is rough, blackish green.
However, this last characteristic is only noticeable when they are still on the tree, but when it is harvested, the skin turns purple to black. During the time it begins to ripen, the fruit begins to soften. In this manner, the consumer can detect the optimal moment to consume it.
These fruits are of excellent quality, because apart from not containing fruit, they have a powerful resistance to the post-harvest life brought by harvest, transport and distribution.
It is also worth noting that this variety of avocados only blooms once a year, from the beginning to the middle of spring. In addition to this, depending on its thermal accumulation and the variety, the time it takes to mature is up to 11 months. Once this fruit matures, it can be kept on the tree for a few months without presenting any deterioration. This is what allows the harvest period to be extended.

Hass avocado as the heart fruit

The Hass avocado variant, also known as the heart fruit, owes 80% of exports to Mexico, since that is where it is mostly grown. This fruit is thus known not only for its similarity to a human heart, but also for its benefits for it.
The reason for this is its high concentration of oils that are very beneficial for reducing cholesterol, protecting the circulatory system. For this reason, it is considered the most commercialized variety or type, as well as the best known.
This variant is a little smaller, and, as mentioned above, is a green color when ripe. However, when it is ready for consumption it is a violet color that is so dark that it reaches a blackish tone, coupled with a thick and rough skin.
As for its pulp, it has a yellow smell, while its flavor is somewhat similar to that of dried fruit.

How should avocado be consumed?

When buying the Hass avocado, if what you wish is to eat it at that very moment, you must carefully select the fruit, so that it yields with just a little pressure. But, if what you want is to consume it in the next few days, you should choose those with a firm appearance.
If the fruit is too green, you can try to speed up its ripening by placing it in a paper bag. Inside the paper bag, you will need to keep it at room temperature until fully ripe, if possible with an apple to speed up the process.
To peel them, you should know that this is a very simple process once they are ripe. Just cut them in half and rotate one of the pieces in order to separate them both, then remove the seed with the help of a spoon. To do this, just slide the spoon under it and remove it.
To prevent the Hass avocado from oxidizing or discoloring after you have peeled it, sprinkle its surface with lemon juice or white vinegar. If you do not have any of these, just sprinkle it with lime juice.

How should avocado be consumed?

To peel and cut the avocado, you just have to use a board or non-slip surface where you will peel the avocado. Remember to place a dry towel under the board in order to prevent the board from slipping while you are using the board.
Place the avocado on top, hold the knife and begin to cut it lengthwise. You should hold the avocado with both hands and after cutting, gently turn both sides of the cut part in opposite directions.                                                                            This should release the seed so that it is in two separate halves. In one hand, hold the half of the Hass avocado that still has the seed, now, with the help of a spoon, gently insert it under the seed towards the center. Then gently press it out until the seed has been successfully extracted. To separate the skin, insert the spoon between the skin and the green food inside, then slide the spoon around along the edge. This way you can follow the line of the skin. Once you have finished this process, you can repeat it with the other half of the Hass avocado.

When is the best time to consume it?

The best time to consume Hass avocado is during the months of June and July. Also, there is a second season, running from the beginning to the end of October, when its consumption is recommended.
